Tips for Searching

Basic Search

Just type in search terms in the search box, then click on the magnifying-glass-shaped icon.
  • ISBN and ISSN may be searched with or without hyphens. If you search with hyphens and get no results, omit hyphens and try again.

Boolean Search

KOSMOS allows you to use Boolean operators (AND, OR, and NOT) for more complex search. If you use more than an operator, the search formula will be processed from left to right.
  • Use parentheses to group search terms and change order of processing.
  • In case of languages read from right to left, for an example Hebrew, the search formula is processed  from right to left also.
  • Boolean operators MUST be typed in capitals while general search terms do not distinguish small and capital letters.

AND Search

Put a space or AND between search terms to perform AND Search. Make sure to type AND in capital letters. You will get search results including all the search terms you have typed.
<Example> In order to search items that include both global and warming, type in search terms as follows.
space
and

Phrase Search

To search for an exact phrase, try Phrase Search. If you enclose more than a word in quotation marks, the search terms are recognized as a phrase.
  • If you use a comma as a separator, please put a space afterwards. Otherwise the comma will be recognized as a part of a phrase, resulting in getting a fewer search results.
<Example> To search global warming as a phrase, type in the search terms as follows.

OR Search

If you put OR between search terms, you will get search results including one of the terms at least. Make sure to type OR in capital letters.
<Example> In order to search items including Irish or Celtic, type in the search terms as follows.

NOT Search

You may exclude specific terms and phrases by putting NOT in front of them. Make sure to type NOT in capital letters.
<Example> To search for items including Celtic but Irish, type in the search terms as follows.

Wildcard Search

Wildcards are used in search terms to represent one or more other characters. *For English only.
question mark (?) may be used to represent a single character, anywhere in the word.  It is most useful when there are variable spellings for a word, and you want to search for all variants at once.
<Example> wom?n matches woman and women.
An asterisk (*) may be used to specify any number of characters. It is typically used at the end of a root word. This is very helpful when you search for variable endings of a word.
<Example> cultur* matches culture, cultural, culturally etc.

Grouping of Search Terms

By using parentheses you may group search terms to organize a search formula.
<Example> The item you are looking for includes Shakespeare. It also includes tragedy or sonnet. The search formula may be as follows.
